Disaster Aid Canada is supporting Rotary Australia World Community Service. Donations made through Disaster Aid Canada by Canadians are tax deductible and we will be working with Disaster Aid International and Rotary clubs in Australia to ensure help is provided where it is most needed. Several projects have already been established for specific Bushfire areas around Australia. The Australia Rotary District Governors have formed a committee which will decide where the funds are to be distributed. We would typically utilize local Rotary Clubs on the ground in affected areas to identify those families, Individuals and small businesses in most need.

For years Australian Firefighters have come to Canada to help during our Fire Season. This year many Canadian Firefighters are in Australia battling the terrible conditions down under. You can also help.

Disaster Aid Canada and Rotary are taking the lead and providing support for Australians in need. To this end several Rotary Districts and Clubs in Australia have established projects which are ready and able to accept donations from you. All of those projects can apply for funds from this appeal.

Here are answers to some questions we have been asked:

How will the money be distributed?
Several projects have already been established for specific bushfire areas around Australia. The Australia Rotary District Governors have formed a committee which will decide where the funds are to be distributed. We would typically utilise local Rotary Clubs on the ground in affected areas to identify those families, Individuals and small businesses in most need.

Will it be only used for 2019-2020 fire relief and rebuilding?
Yes

Are there any plans for animal relief?
That depends on the projects agreed to and the decisions of the District Governors Committee. But the possibility exists that funding could well be applied to an animal rescue operation in any of the affected areas (which is now twice the size of Greater London).

Have any of the funds raised to date been distributed yet?
Not yet. Other organisations (Red Cross etc) have collected substantial funds which are likely to be used for immediate relief. The Federal government has also committed funds to this cause. Rotary’s funding typically tends to be a second responder, so infrastructure, rebuilding, etc. Rotary clubs will be able to apply for funds for selected families, projects and businesses in their areas.
