Notes on presentation by Chris Bowring, who was President of the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman Sunrise when hurricane Ivan devastated the island nation.

- every plan has to be tailor made for the situation, but must be flexible

- we all tend to be complacent

- radio stations became a very important way to communicate with the community at large

-suggests issuing a questionnaire to club members to assess their willingness to particpate in readiness, response and relief efforts - but have to be sensitive

- draw up a list of key personnel who are willing to help; dialogue with government agencies, police, Red Cross, local airport; one club cannot do a lot on its own in terms of relief.

-in a crisis you sometimes find the people you expect to be helpful turn out not to be, and vice versa

-small details are important - eg extra batteries for satellite phones, keeping those phones charged,knowing who has them and where they are kept

-back up list of key personnel off site eg google docs

-things change especially in the Rotary club hierarchy; keep updated

-club website crucial-should have 3 people capable of accessing and controlling it - great means of communication
